The two auto-reverse tests

Modern openers have two safety systems, and both are worth testing. Start with the contact reverse. With the door open, lay a solid object flat on the floor in the door's path, such as a length of two-by-four laid down on its side. Run the door closed. When it touches the object it should stop and reverse back up. If it stops and sits there, or keeps pushing down, it needs service.

Then the photo eyes. With the door closing, pass an object like a broom handle through the beam near the floor while keeping your hands and body clear of the opening. The door should stop and reverse immediately. If nothing happens, the sensors may be misaligned, dirty, or miswired. Never disable, bypass, or raise the sensors to stop a door from reversing, because that removes the only thing protecting whatever is standing underneath.

The balance test

A balanced door stays roughly where you put it and feels manageable through the whole travel.
